SF League Rules
Changes for 2011/12
These are shown below in italics.
In an attempt to reduce confusion the Print and PDI Leagues are now each made up of Divisions and this has been reflected in revised wording below.
Dates for 2012/13
The closing date by which the fixtures+judges are notified, Print titles+authors are notified and PDIs received by the is Sunday 7th October 2012.
The Fixure window is Monday 29th October 2012 until Friday 29th March 2013.
General Rules
G1All participating clubs must be fully paid up members of the Southern Photographic Federation.
G2 Images entered must be entirely the work of the photographer. Composite images are permitted provided all component images meet this requirement. (PAGB wording.)
G3A member representing more than 1 club may not submit images for selection that are so similar as to be deemed the same.
G4League round window dates will be determined by the and clubs advised.
G5The Council reserve the right to amend the rules for any specific event and in any dispute the decision of the SF Council will be final.
G6Entries will not be accepted after the closing date as determined by Council.
G7The SF cannot accept liability for the loss or damage of any image.
G8Any breach of these rules may lead to disqualification at the discretion of the Council.
G9All relevant forms and information will be maintained and circulated by the SF Competition Secretary. e.g. Master copies of scoresheets, receiving all completed forms and compiling results.
G10 Any protest must be sent in an email from an official of a competing club to the SF Competition Secretary and SF Secretary within 7 days of the fixture. The matter will be discussed by Council and, if necessary, acted upon and the result notified to the concerned parties or published on the SF website.
G11 The Council reserve the right to use digital images entered into Southern Photographic Federation competitions and Exhibition to produce a presentation CD, show in a web gallery and be considered for any PAGB digital competitions and exhibitions. If an author does not wish for their work to be used in this way it must stated so with their club's entry. The author's copyright will be observed.
PDI Rules
C1Clubs must provide 8 PDI images in JPEG format.
C2Each image must be provided in two sizes. These must be up to, but not exceeding: 1400 pixels wide by 1050 pixels high and 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high.
C3The required filename format is [SF club no.][Image no.]_[Title]_[Author+Distinctions].jpg

C4PDI images must be emailed to
C5A return postal address must be included so that the CD can be sent to your Club.
C6The SF will provide a CD of all images received in their Division for PDI projection, to each entrant Club, prior to the first of the Division's fixtures, whether the club has decided to host a fixture or not.
C7If not the Club's Competition Secretary, the Club must nominate a PDI co-ordinator and inform the SF Competition Secretary, of this person's contact details. The Club shall be responsible for informing the SF Competition Secretary if the PDI co-ordinator is changed for any reason.
Print Rules
P1Print mounts must be up to 50cm x 40cm but there is no minimum print size. All Velcro or any other fixings that may cause damage to other competitors' prints must be removed.
P2Prints should be labelled with the SF League labels which show the image number, title and author. Print title & authors must be notified to the by the appropriate date. A return postal address must be included so that the labels can be sent to your Club.
P3 It is the responsibility of each club to ensure that their Prints are presented at each fixture, however, it is not necessary for an individual from a competing club to be present. In the event that a club's prints are not presented they will normally score no points, however, the SF Council will decide the points allocation or penalise appropriate to the circumstances.
The League Competition
L1There will be 2 independent Leagues; Prints and Projected Digital Images (PDIs) and clubs will be separated into Divisions within those Leagues.
L2Each club may enter 8 images in either or both Leagues. The nominated Prints and PDIs must be used throughout the entire competition, without any alteration.
L3Listings of image titles for both Prints and PDIs to be emailed to by the designated date. No alterations to this listing is permitted after the League Fixture Window start date.
L4A maximum of 4 images may be submitted, but no more than 2 in any one section, from any 1 club member.
L5All images must be titled. The use of "untitled" is not acceptable.
L6 A club may optionally host a League fixture for PDIs and/or Prints. Clubs unable to Host fixture(s) must inform the SF Competition Secretary as soon as known/decided. It may be permitted to host on behalf of another club by prior arrangement with the SF Competition Secretary. It is not necessary for a representative of a competing club to attend the fixture.
L7A Fixtures List will be maintained on the SF website. Any clashes in Judge or Fixture Date will be resolved by the SF Competition Secretary based on which Club provided their Fixtures information first.
L8When all League matches have been played, all the scores collated and each Club's position in their Division identified; then, for each Division, 2 Clubs will be promoted and 2 clubs relegated to create the composition of the following season's Divisions. The top 2 clubs in the highest Division and bottom 2 clubs in the lowest Division will remain in their respective Divisions.
L9 At the end of the season the SF Council may vary the composition of Divisions within each League to equalise the number of clubs in each Division or for any other reason as they see fit.
Judging & Judges
J1Judges may judge several fixtures during the League Season. However, they may not judge more than once within the same Division.
J2All images in a Division are to be judged at each fixture.
J3No titles are to be read out prior to judging. Titles can be read out after the image has been scored, with agreement from participating clubs.
J4Images will be marked out of 10 points; the judge may use half marks if they wish.
J5The point allocation of completed fixtures are: the club with highest aggregate score, 7 points, the club with next highest score, 6 points, then 5, and so on. In Divisions with more than 7 participating clubs the points will be adjusted accordingly.
J6In the event of a match tie the points for the 'Tied Positions' will be added together and then shared equally between the tied clubs.
J7The winner for each Division will be the Club scoring the highest number of points.
J8In the event of a tie for a Division winner a full count back will apply. e.g. highest number of 10s, then 9½s, and 9s.
J9 The judge has the sole discretion as to whether the standard of PDI projection or Print lighting is acceptable. The judge may make allowances for viewing characteristics when marking. If it is not possible for the judge to be satisfied with the arrangements the fixture must be postponed or cancelled.
Host Club Responsibilities
R1The Host club will arrange their fixture(s) in conjunction with their opponents.
R2The Host club will book the judge, who must not be a member of any of the clubs within their Division or have any connections with those clubs.
R3Only judges listed in the SF handbook or any other Federation's listing are permitted to judge and should be chosen from the A list whenever possible and specifically for Divisions 1,2 and 3. B Panel Judges may be used for other Divisions by agreement with the Clubs in the specific Divisions(s). Discretion may be applied by the SF Council, if necessary.
R4 Clubs must provide the SF Competition Secretary with their Fixture Date(s) and nominated Judge(s) as soon as known and preferably by same date as the Image Listings are required. All fixtures must be notified to the SF Competition Secretary at least 7 days prior to the fixture; this includes the rearrangement of postponed fixtures.
R5 The host club must nominate a scorer and must email a scanned copy of the scoresheet(s) to . The scoresheet(s) must be duly completed with signatures of the Judge and an official of the host club such as Chairperson or Secretary within 7 days of of the fixture. The League scorer will distribute an electronic copy of the completed scoresheet to all the competing clubs in that Division.
R6All paper copies must be retained by the host club until Finals Day in case of a dispute.
R7For print fixtures the club must allow the judge to see all prints prior to Judging. If possible, display all prints simultaneously.
R8For PDI fixtures the club must allow the judge to see a run through of all PDIs prior to Judging. PDIs must not be altered by the host club, with the exception of the filename and only if required by the projection software.
R9The host club must show the projection test screen as circulated by the SF prior to judging to check that the judge is satisfied with the standard of projection.
R10The host club's PDI co-ordinator is responsible for deleting other clubs images from the computer after the PDI fixture.
R11In all cases the PDI co-ordinators will be responsible for ensuring images will project correctly; they must check this before the event.
Finals Day
Finals Day is to be a celebration of the best imagery within the SF League. All entrants and every Club Member is invited to attend.
F1At Finals Day Awards and Certificates will be presented to Division Winning Clubs and for the Best overall individual Print and PDI.
F2The Print and PDI with the highest cumulative score from the Division rounds from each participating Club are eligible to compete in the individual awards to be judged at Finals Day. In the event of a tie both prints or PDIs will be eligible.
F3It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure their work is presented at Finals Day if they wish to compete for the individual awards. PDIs will be obtained from original submissions.
F4The Federation will be responsible for booking the venue and judge for Finals Day.
F5Certificates not collected or received on Finals Day will be presented at the AGM in May.
