I first met Bob Elliott when working at the Ordnance Survey some 30 years ago. He was in charge of an Office with seventeen draughtsmen and women. Eventually I took over this position as we were both promoted at the same time. Bob went up the scale to the job in charge of Surveyors in South East Region of England. However Bob had proved his ability to run an office with newly trained young draughtsmen and older workers who had more experience and who had advanced to become examiners of maps. This was a challenge of an unusual mix of people.
Bob at that time was an active member of the Ordnance Survey Photographic Society and became their Chairman for four years in the 1980 period. Bob found a healthy rivalry with himself, John Philpott and Leigh Preston helping him hone his Photographic outlook and set him on his way to greater achievements in this marvellous medium.
Bob had joined Kingston Camera Club on his secondment from the Ordnance Survey. On his return to Southampton he joined Southampton Camera Club as he felt that he needed a stimulating programme to give him that extra ‘push ‘ to extend his creativity.
During this period he had perfected Colour Slide sequences and then onto Monochrome Prints and in the Digital age Colour Prints. He gained his Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society in 1984 and then added the Fellowship soon afterwards, later on was asked to be a member of the RPS Visual Arts Distinction Panel. Bob Elliott also became a member of the Southern Federation Council in 1984.
Bob became President of Southampton Camera Club in its Centenary year of 1996. This was followed by a very successful year under his tutorship.
Bob will be sadly missed for his brilliant Lectures and his judgments of other people's work which left the worker with a feeling of achievement even in the most humble image. His summing up at International level was recognised throughout the Photographic Society of Great Britain.
