Sadly one of the local stalwarts of the photographic world, Stan Webb, died recently after a long stoical fight against cancer. His smile and ready wit stayed with him and he remained active attending his own club until a few weeks before he died.
He joined Viewfinders in 1973, shortly after the club moved from Southampton to Romsey. As we all know, never one to stand back, by September 1974 Stan had become the Club's Vice Chairman, the following year Chairman, in 1976 he moved to being Club Secretary and by 1977 he was Programme Planner, Chairman in 1980 and treasurer in 1981. This was the pattern of Stan's cheery commitment to the club - he stayed a member of the Club's Committee until 2003, when ill health forced him to relinquish some of his duties. After the Club moved to their present clubroom at Timsbury he became the Club's representative on the Hall Management Committee where his knowledge of the regulations covering the building trade was to be invaluable. He was also a founder member of the Club's AV Group, which have regularly given shows around the area for several years. Another of his Club 'jobs' was the organisation of the rota of 'Senior Citizen Shows' that Viewfinders' members put on during the winter months. He was made a life member of Viewfinders in 1987.
Remembered always as someone cheery, willing and enthusiastic, soon after joining, Stan became Viewfinders representative at SPF quarterly meetings. He was quickly elected onto the SPF Council, again a body on which he served continuously until recently, mainly as Publicity Officer. He was elected Vice President in 1985 becoming President the following year.
Stan soon became known around the Federation visiting many Clubs as a judge over the years. Always willing to volunteer and help, Stan was regularly seen at events hosted by the Federation. Some of the equipment used by the Federation at the Crosfield Hall in Romsey was stored in Stan's garage for many years at the expense of his car.
An honour bestowed upon Stan in 1996 for his services to club photography was that of Award for Meritorious Service of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain.
His love of photography led him to work as a lecturer both at further education classes at Eastleigh Technical College, where he taught darkroom processing and at Stanbridge Earls School. Some of his students at Eastleigh having had their interest in photography whetted by Stan became members of Viewfinders. After retiring from full time employment with New Forest District Council, his love of photography led him to a part time job with Photoflair in Romsey, where again with a cheery smile he was able to give advice to any customer needing assistance.
He acquired a computer and like many others he struggled initially to come to terms with Photoshop, this latest aspect of photography.
Never one to sit on the sidelines, in 1999 when the U3A (University of the Third Age) group was formed in Romsey he readily took on the job of secretary, a position which he held until about 18 months ago. He also found time to organise a photographic section for the Group, which he was leading until shortly before he died.
Always one to be there with his cheery smile and ready wit, volunteering his services whenever needed, Stan will be sorely missed by his own club, the Federation, the many clubs he visited as a judge and every one else that he met through his love of photography.
